Find­ing your ‘per­fect match’ might not be what you ex­pect

While study­ing Stan­dard Grade ac­counts, El­iz­a­beth Milne found a sub­ject that she re­ally en­joyed and one that matched her skills and abil­i­ties. What she did not know at the time was that this in­ter­est, skill and knowl­edge would ul­ti­mately be matched to a suc­cess­ful de­gree and then a re­ward­ing ca­reer in the field of ac­coun­tancy. Af­ter grad­u­at­ing from The Univer­sity of Aberdeen, El­iz­a­beth joined a lo­cal firm of char­tered ac­coun­tants and busi­ness ad­vis­ers in a trainee role within the firm’s audit depart­ment, where she gained her ACCA qual­i­fi­ca­tion. Her ca­reer then saw her move to AAB’s ac­count­ing ser­vices depart­ment, where ini­tially she was in­volved in var­i­ous tasks, in­clud­ing year-end com­pli­ance work, as well as a grow­ing re­spon­si­bil­ity with the firm’s out­sourc­ing en­gage­ments.

It was in this out­sourc­ing role that El­iz­a­beth re­ally found her call­ing. She was now in a role that was con­tin­u­ously de­vel­op­ing, com­bined both book­keep­ing and busi­ness ad­vi­sory work, while also giv­ing her a new re­la­tion­ship with her clients by be­ing so in­volved in their busi­nesses day-to-day and in spe­cific projects. It was through this out­sourc­ing re­la­tion­ship that El­iz­a­beth found more and more she was play­ing match­maker by lis­ten­ing to the needs of her clients and hav­ing the knowl­edge of their busi­ness to be able to spot where else AAB could help.

This key re­la­tion­ship, and in­sight into their client’s busi­nesses, is what El­iz­a­beth says the out­sourc­ing depart­ment strives to achieve: “One of the main things we look to achieve for our clients is to help save the owner’s or di­rec­tor’s time, so that they can con­cen­trate on the strate­gic goals of their busi­ness. Pro­vid­ing a high-stan­dard out­sourced finance func­tion for our clients means that the clients have peace of mind that all the ac­count­ing and re­port­ing re­quire­ments are in hand. What’s so great about the ser­vice is that it is very flex­i­ble. We can sup­port clients with as much or as lit­tle of the finance func­tion as is re­quired. Be­ing able to adapt to their needs, and then work­ing with them to iden­tify where we can re­ally help and make a dif­fer­ence to their busi­ness, is such a re­ward­ing part of the job.
