Finding your ‘perfect match’ might not be what you expect
While studying Standard Grade accounts, Elizabeth Milne found a subject that she really enjoyed and one that matched her skills and abilities. What she did not know at the time was that this interest, skill and knowledge would ultimately be matched to a successful degree and then a rewarding career in the field of accountancy. Anderson Anderson & Brown LLP’s Elizabeth Milne
After graduating from The University of Aberdeen, Elizabeth joined a local firm of chartered accountants and business advisers in a trainee role within the firm’s audit department, where she gained her ACCA qualification. Her career then saw her move to AAB’s accounting services department, where initially she was involved in various tasks, including year-end compliance work, as well as a growing responsibility with the firm’s outsourcing engagements.
“Being able to help make a difference is such a rewarding part of the job
It was in this outsourcing role that Elizabeth really found her calling. She was now in a role that was continuously developing, combined both bookkeeping and business advisory work, while also giving her a new relationship with her clients by being so involved in their businesses day-to-day and in specific projects. It was through this outsourcing relationship that Elizabeth found more and more she was playing matchmaker by listening to the needs of her clients and having the knowledge of their business to be able to spot where else AAB could help.
This key relationship, and insight into their client’s businesses, is what Elizabeth says the outsourcing department strives to achieve: “One of the main things we look to achieve for our clients is to help save the owner’s or director’s time, so that they can concentrate on the strategic goals of their business. Providing a high-standard outsourced finance function for our clients means that the clients have peace of mind that all the accounting and reporting requirements are in hand. What’s so great about the service is that it is very flexible. We can support clients with as much or as little of the finance function as is required. Being able to adapt to their needs, and then working with them to identify where we can really help and make a difference to their business, is such a rewarding part of the job.
“At AAB, I found my perfect match, for my career and development goals, which is evidenced by my recent promotion to senior manager. As well as this, I also get to find the perfect match for my clients, ensuring they receive a quality service, while also looking to add extra value by identifying opportunities that they may not otherwise be aware of.”
