THE CONSTANT GARDENER

ITV3, 11.10pm

John le Carre is one of Britain’s foremost writers, and has been producing gripping espionage and political thrillers for many a moon. Among his best-known offerings are The Russia House, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and The Night Manager. All three have been turned into films or TV series, and although popular, this cinematic version of le Carre’s The Constant Gardener surpasses them all. Ralph Fiennes stars as diplomat Justin Quayle, who marries activist Tessa (an Oscar-winning Rachel Weisz) after a whirlwind romance. The couple start a new life in Kenya but their happiness is shattered when she loses a baby and is then murdered, seemingly by a local friend. However, Justin suspects there’s more to the case than the authorities are letting on, and risks life and limb to get to the bottom of the matter.
