Partick’s parachute a lot bigger than County’s

-

Partick Thistle will receive twice as much as Ross County from the SPFL in parachute payments, despite both clubs suffering the same fate of relegation this season.

Clubs dropping out of the top flight are awarded money to help them cope with the reduction in revenues experienced in the Championship. The extra cash extends into a second year if promotion is not won at the first opportunity and, as Dundee United will encounter next term, runs out if the relegated clubs have to endure a third season in the second tier.

After being consigned to bottom spot, County will be granted £300,000 from the SPFL for next term and a further £125,000 if they fail to win instant promotion back to the Premiership.

However, having finished in 11th place before losing to Livingston in the play-offs, Thistle will receive £500,000 next season and then £250,000 if they spend a second year in the Championship.

The money is paid in addition to the prize money both clubs won for their finishing places in the Premiership this term.

Thistle earned £1.13 million for finishing 11th, while County took £1.07m for bottom spot.

A spokesman for the SPFL said: “Partick Thistle will receive £500,000 in their first season in the Championship and then £250,000 in the second unless they win immediate promotion in their first season.

“Ross County in turn receive £300,000 next season and then £125,000 in the second if they don’t go straight back up.
