Animals: Inquisitive polar bear cub heads in to some difficulty with his traffic cone toy

These adorable pictures show the first polar bear born in the UK in 25 years struggling to get a traffic cone off of its head.

Hapless Hamish was spotted by amused onlookers as he wrestled with the bright red traffic cone at the Highland Wildlife Park near Kingussie.

Its adult bears, Walker and Arctos, have long been fans of the cones as playthings – with construction company Wills Bros John Paul JV donating 50 to the two boys and hard hats also a favourite.

Young Hamish, however, is learning and the confused cub – earlier seen carrying his plaything around his enclosure – could only see red for around an hour.

He was born in December last year and given the “strong Scottish name” after 21,000 fans chose it in an online poll.

ground, picked up the squashed cone in his paws and soon was running around aimlessly with it on his head.

He eventually managed to get the cone off and threw it back into the water in anger. His mum, Victoria, looked on, and swam, apparently unmoved by his experience.

One surprised onlooker could barely believe their eyes while on holiday in the Highlands when they saw the cub’s bizarre headgear.

Debbie Kelly, 41, an admin officer from Edinburgh, said she sympathised with the bear because he’s still a baby.

She said: “It’s my favourite photo of Hamish. He’s such a lovely, daft polar bear. He did get it off his head and chucked it in the water afterwards.

“It all seemed very exciting to him. For us to watch it was very funny. He is still a baby and still learning.”
