Sneak peek at new sports car concept

-

Opel has confirmed that it will release a new GT concept later in the year as a design vision for the brand.

The manufacturer has only shown a teaser image of the concept so far, which reveals a large sloping bonnet and imposing LED lights, as well as a prominent Opel badge.

The GT car was announced as part of Opel and Vauxhall’s Tech Day held in Rüsselsheim, Germany, showcasing the new research and development centre.

Mark Adams, vice-president of design at Opel, said the car would showcase “truly what we want the Opel and Vauxhall brands to be”.

At the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, Opel unveiled another GT sports car concept, which took inspiration from the classic 60s and 70s GT car as well as the more modern Monza concept. The upcoming concept is expected to be a development of this 2016 car.

Adams said: “When you do a great design it has a timeless quality that we also want to capture in our execution.

“Later this year we’re going to be showing that car as an expression of truly what we want our brand to be.”

Speaking about how Opel and Vauxhall’s designs sit alongside the looks of PSA Groupe’s other brands – Peugeot, Citroen and DS – Adams said the French brands had a “clear expression and momentum” when it came to their design language and that he wanted Opel and Vauxhall to do the same.

He added: “The GT concept was really an expression of our core values and this pureness of design that we wanted to capture, but done in a very progressive and bold way. And that was something that we still want to build on.” While no official details have yet been announced about the forthcoming concept, it is likely to be revealed later this year.
