Focus on loch and its legend
On the screen:
Loch Ness: Ted Danson, Joely Richardson, Ian Holm and Keith Allen were among the stars of the 1996 film, with Danson the cynical American anthropologist who finds love and loses his certainty there is no Nessie, as he settles into his new Highland home.
The Loch: This crime drama, shown last year on ITV, followed a police detective as she investigated the murder of a piano teacher. Pre-broadcast, the show caused some entertainment locally when what looked like the remains of Nessie were planted on the banks of the loch.
Incident at Loch Ness: This 2004 mockumentary by Werner Herzog and Zak Penn followed Herzog and his crew supposedly producing a project called Enigma of Loch Ness. Several media outlets announced the production as a serious film before it came out.
The Water Horse: This 2007 fantasy film, based on Dick KingSmith’s children’s novel, is about a boy who discovers a mysterious egg and cares for the “water horse” that hatches. The creature, loosely based on the Celtic water horse, grows up to be Nessie.
Scooby-Doo and the Loch Ness Monster: In this 2004 featurelength cartoon, the gang visit relatives in Scotland who are being terrorised by Nessie. At the end of the film, the Loch Ness mystery remains just that – a mystery. At least the pesky kids didn’t blame the caretaker this time.
