Carson looking for Highland to get their show on the road

- BY DAVE EDWARDS

Highland coach Davie Carson wants to see his side take its home form on the road in Tennent’s National League Division 2.

Last week’s impressive 22-8 home win over Dumfries Saints took them into third place in the table on 25 points. But their two defeats so far have both come on the road and Carson wants more points away from Canal Park – starting with tomorrow’s trip to face Glasgow Accies.

Carson, whose side won National 3 last season, said: “It’s definitely a step-up in the physicality and the way opposing teams are playing. We’ve had a couple of slip-ups on the way, but we’re really delighted we managed to beat Dumfries in a really tough game last weekend.

“We are trying to make our new Canal Park ground a bit of a fortress. I’ve told the boys that if we managed to win our home games at least we would be quite comfortable in the league, then we can start picking up points away from home as well. We’ve managed to do that once but it would be nice to have a few more starting with this weekend.”

Accies have struggled to find form, but Highland won’t be taking them lightly.

Carson added: “The fact that they are in 11th place in the table means nothing as we had two really tough games against them last season.

“We drew down there and just managed to snatch a victory at home so we know it will be just as tough this weekend.

“It’s a fantastic pitch down at Anniesland but Accies may be missing students and that may be why they haven’t made the greatest of starts.

“It doesn’t matter, though, as the one thing we know is that no game we’ve played in this league has been an easy one.

“We did have three weeks rest after we gained promotion, but the lads turned up for training, they’ve put the work in and it certainly paid off in terms of our strength and fitness.

“We are a young team and we’re learning very quickly and it’s pleasing to see the players work hard for each other.”
