Setback spurs ‘pride and courage’ as Jags snatch winner

BUCKIE ROTHES 3 2

Buckie Thistle bounced back from their crushing defeat at Forres last weekend by edging out Rothes 3-2 with a late winner at Victoria Park.

Jags manager Graeme Stewart was pleased with his side’s response to the 7-2 reverse at Forres.

He said: “We needed a reaction and we got one. I thought we deserved the win and could have scored a few more goals.

“We thought it was going to be a draw but we dug deep and showed a bit of character to win the game. I could see in training that they were up for the game and they battled brilliantly.

“This game was about showing a bit of pride and courage to play for Buckie as it’s a big club.”

The home side took the lead three minutes before the interval when an Ally McKenzie pass found an unmarked Steven Ross, who fired home from four yards.

Rothes levelled in the 62nd minute when Steven Anderson bundled the ball home after a goalmouth scramble following Scott Davidson’s corner.

Ross got his and Buckie’s second goal two minutes later when he headed a Sam Robertson cross into the net beyond Cameron MacKay.

Rothes were reduced to 10 men in the 72nd minute with Dale Wood seeing red for a challenge on Scott Adams. Scott Davidson found a second equaliser for the visitors 10 minutes later, thrashing a free kick into the top right-hand corner from the edge of the penalty area.

Adams won it for Buckie right at the death after a miscued clearance fell to the striker and he found the bottom corner from 18 yards.

Rothes manager Steven MacDonald said: “I don’t think we deserved anything from the game. It’s sickening to lose the game late on but I thought we were abysmal and I didn’t think Buckie were much better.

“We were lacklustre all over the park. It was very frustrating to watch and it’s going to be a long winter if we don’t roll our sleeves up. It’s as poor as I’ve seen us play for a long time.”
