Mckay’s form reminiscent of heyday at Caley Thistle

-

Billy Mckay admits his current goal streak feels just like being back in his Caley Thistle heyday under Terry Butcher.

After a sluggish start to the season, the Ross County striker has exploded in form with eight goals in the last four games, taking his tally to 11 for the campaign.

Saturday’s 5-0 hammering of Morton in Dingwall brought a second hat-trick of the season, with the 30-year-old crediting County’s team spirit and quality of service for the rich return.

Mckay reckons it is all reminiscent of his Inverness success from season 2012-13 when he netted 27 goals.

Back then, a Butcher team featuring the likes of Graeme and Andrew Shinnie, Richie Foran and Ross Draper, swept the likes of Aberdeen, Hearts and Hibs aside to finish fourth in the top-flight.

Mckay, shaping up as a flop signing the year before after scoring just three times, clicked spectacularly that year with 27 goals.

Mckay said: “Confidence plays a big part in football but when the lads are laying on assists like that I feel like I’m going to score in every game.

“The first was a really good team goal and the next two were quite easy for me.

“That’s down to the lads. There were times earlier in the season the ball wasn’t quite ricocheting or I was getting into positions and the ball wasn’t coming.

“It just feels like a few years ago and that great spell I had at Caley Thistle, when everything was falling for me. It feels like I’m in the right place at the right time.

“I’m sure, with these lads, if I get myself in the right areas they’re going to find me.

“Under Terry Butcher, it kind of happened in a similar way. I wasn’t really in the team at the start of the season and then managed to get in and start scoring from around about October.

“It does feel the same. It is a similar togetherness between all the lads in the dressing room. That’s something I’ve not really been part of since those days.

“We had a really successful year back then and it is lining up to be one now, but we know we can’t rest on our laurels.”
