Sticking Strictly to what matters most
SIR, – It was so reassuring to read your article in Saturday’s P&J regarding Downing Street’s declaration that “Brexit will not threaten Strictly”.
Indeed, this had been one of my major concerns for
inhabitants of the four home nations of Britain.
He quite rightly states that in 1940 there was heroism in Britain’s stance, but he reverts to the defeats in Norway and France and selectively highlights the fact Britain was left with no allies in Europe.
Nowhere does he mention the fighting spirit of our forefathers, or the naval battles and superiority of our homegrown RAF, for example, or of our valiant soldiers.
Mr Hunter’s agenda to conflate Britain in wartime and Brexit today is lacking in relevance and the omission of certain facts like the harsh Russian winter defeating Hitler’s forces, or the fact the US has repeatedly warned our European neighbours to pay their dues into Nato as an agreed GDP amount are completely missed in his off-target interpretation.
Cherry-picking negative facts for his agenda is a perverse notion of democratic persuasion, especially when the referendum result has been produced and Brexit is our country’s future and I am sure there has been a collective sigh of relief from Remainers across the UK following this statement.
reported to be 95% agreed. And when it comes to being alert to Putin’s advances then we can be assured Britain’s forces are on the alert 24/7 and are funded properly by the Treasury, but Mr Hunter prefers to espouse a fearful vision of the Russian bear and our vulnerability.
I prefer to stand proudly alongside my countrymen with a pioneering spirit and self belief.
