McGovern: Win, lose, win, lose pattern must end

-

Elgin City captain Jon-Paul McGovern cared little about breaking his club goalscoring duck with a clever curled strike in his team’s 4-2 loss to Berwick.

All that mattered to the Borough Briggs veteran was his team’s failure to get a result as City continued their win, lose, win, lose sequence in League 2 for a 10th straight game.

McGovern feels it will take a real team effort to help Elgin achieve back-to-back victories and finally put a sustained run of results together.

The far-travelled 38-year-old, who began his career with Celtic, said: “This team is always capable of scoring goals but the rest of the team need to then give them a platform.

“We need to do that to ensure that when they are scoring goals, it is winning us games.

“It’s not down to individuals. It is us all going home tonight saying we can do better for Elgin, for ourselves and for the supporters.”

McGovern doesn’t believe Elgin are a side who should ever be shipping four at home in League 2, especially given a past track record of making it very difficult for visiting teams.

The ease by which they gave away the costly counters was the most disturbing part for the Glaswegian to contemplate.

McGovern said: “In the past, we’ve made Borough Briggs a wee bit of a fortress and its well known that you come up here and get a tough game.

“But today we gifted them goals and gave them the bit of encouragement they needed.

“Berwick have been crying out for that kind of encouragement and they would have relished it.

“Their free kick was a great goal but, apart from that, we can maybe stop the other goals as a team, defensively, but also from midfield and the attackers as well.

“We can all do better and that was the most disappointing part.”

“This team is always capable of scoring goals”
