Drivers arrested by road safety patrols

-

Ten motorists across the Highlands and islands were arrested over the weekend in connection with driving while under the influence of drink or drugs.

Eight drivers – six men and two women – are to be reported in connection with alleged drink driving.

Two men will also be reported over alleged drug driving related offences.

The incidents took place in Inverness, Easter Ross, Sutherland, Caithness, Orkney and Shetland.

Road policing inspector Neil Lumsden said: “We have been very clear that driving

under the influence of drink or drugs will not be tolerated. We have regularly issued warnings about the dangers and highlighted cases of drivers being reported for detected offences.

“It is frustrating that the message is still not sinking in for some drivers.

“Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs will significantly impair your ability to control your vehicle.

“It is a selfish act which puts the safety of entirely innocent road users in danger. You are also putting your own life at risk and when you are caught you will face prosecution and the possible loss of your livelihood.

“You have to ask yourself if it is worth it?

“Our officers will continue to carry out proactive patrols aimed at removing offenders from the roads. Anyone with concerns about a suspected drink or drug driver is urged to contact 101 or 999 in an emergency.”

The youngest offender is aged 19, with the oldest being 71.
