Mackenzie enters three events as he eyes Glasgow glory

Ullapool’s Stephen Mackenzie, has entered the 60m, long jump and high jump at tomorrow’s national open indoor meeting at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena, as he vies for a place in the Great Britain team for this summer’s European under-20 championsh­ips.

The 17-year-old is one of a large number of north athletes aiming to make an impact on the ranking lists.

Scottish under-20 pole vault champion Andrew McFarlane from Ross County AC, who has a best indoor height of 4.47m and an outdoor 4.61 to his credit, might be expected to test that mark in a competitio­n which also features another top junior, Dylan Thomson of Pitreavie AC.

McFarlane’s brother Daniel will compete in the senior men’s pole vault while their Ross County clubmate Alister Mackay will feature in the under-17 competitio­n.

Stornoway’s Connor Maclean will line-up in the men’s 1,500m against Sol Sweeney of Perth Strathtay.

Also in the field are Inverness Harriers’ Stephen Mackay and Finlay Murray from East Sutherland.

Aberdeen AAC’s multi events specialist­s Robbie Farquhar and Jane Davidson have entered a variety of events.

Farquhar is listed for the under-20 men’s 60m, 60m hurdles, and long jump, while Davidson will take part in the 60m hurdles and long jump.

Carmen Neat of Aberdeen AC, the Scottish junior champion,tackles her first high jump of the winter. Aberdeen AAC’s Sharon Jakisa and Robert Gordon University student Elidh de Klerk of Dundee Hawkhill Harriers will aim to make an impression in the women’s 60m and 200m while Elgin AAC’s Emma Barclay tackles the under-17’s 60m hurdles and 300m.

Scotland road running internatio­nal Jenny Bannerman will feature in the 1,500m.
