Lovat boosted by Heath signing and return of two former players
Camanachd Cup finalists Lovat have swooped to sign international attacker Fraser Heath from Glen Urquhart and are boosted by the return of two former players.
The pacy 25-year-old Heath, who skippered Glen in the 2014 Camanachd final, is an important addition to the Balgate Park squad.
Lovat boss Fraser Gallacher said: “Fraser has joined us and we’re pleased to have his pace, strength and goal power. He’s definitely a Premiership player.
“His father, Graham Heath, has also rejoined us as fitness coach because a new job rules out Paul Mellis.”
Ryan Ferguson, who did not play first team shinty last year for family reasons, is now available this year.
Gallacher said: “Ryan’s midfield power has been missed so his return is a boost.
“We’re also pleased that Calum Macaulay has returned after a year out following his head injury.
“Drew Howie is in New Zealand and won’t play this season but Fraser Heath and the other lads actually give us a deeper squad, which is welcome.”
James Whyte has retired from the second team and has been recruited by Gallacher as assistant manager.
Lovat’s £420,000 new clubhouse, built with EU assistance, is now completed and all the club’s teams will figure in a gala opening the weekend before the season starts.
With six weeks until the Premiership starts, Lochaber are still without a team manager.
Club official Aeleen Campbell said: “We’ve had no replies to our advertisements so we’re re-advertising in the hope someone will come forward.
“We’ve a good bunch of players but they need direction.”
