Concern over rail provision for fans

Aberdeen Central MSP Kevin Stewart has written to ScotRail asking for additional train services to the Granite City to cater for fans attending the Euro 2020 qualifiers.

Members of the public have contacted Mr Stewart following concerns around the lack of transport provision after the games.

All of the matches will be played at Hampden Park with the vast majority planned to kick off at 7.45pm.

This will mean matches finish after the last train to Aberdeen has departed.

Mr Stewart said: “I’ve asked ScotRail to look at what can be done to help folk from Aberdeen, and the north-east, travel to these important fixtures.

“This has become a real issue given the lack of games being played on a Saturday afternoon.

“We’re in a situation where fans would have to leave Hampden shortly after half-time in order to catch the 21:40 service from Glasgow Queen Street to Aberdeen. Fans will either have to travel by bus, car or stay down in Glasgow overnight.”

A ScotRail spokesman said: “We will announce our plans for each of the Euro 2020 qualifying fixtures closer to the time.”
