Jordan Lowdon described Saturday’s savage beating by Cowdenbeath as one of his worst lows in football.

But the former Celtic youth is convinced the prospect of a trip to face Neil Lennon’s Hibernian can lift Elgin City out of the doldrums.

The Borough Briggs side were thoroughly dismantled by the Blue Brazil, with goals from David Cox, Kris Renton and Jordan Allan’s double doing the damage.

Elgin were inept – and Darryl McHardy’s second-half reply did little to disguise the fact.

Lowdon, formerly with Brechin, Arbroath and Clyde, also played in England, Cyprus, Australia and New Zealand, but had rarely experienced anything like it.

The 26-year-old from Bellshill said: “That’s one of the hardest results I’ve been part of as a professional.

“Losing 4-1 at home is obviously not good. The boys are pretty beaten up about it – we’re bitterly disappointed.

“We conceded some soft goals that were easily preventable. We came out for the second half right up for it and conceded another soft goal.

“This was an opportunity to push away from some teams, but it wasn’t to be. It looks like it will be a dogfight between a number of teams to get into the play-offs.

“We have to push hard and try to win as many games as possible to get fourth spot. That’s still the target.”

Cowdenbeath are now ahead of City on goal difference in League 2 and within striking distance of Annan for the final play-off spot.

The Fifers took the lead in the 17 th minute when a cross from Fraser Mullen found its way to Cox, who lashed a shot high into the Elgin net.

It was a lively start to the game from Cox, who also drew a save from home keeper Kyle Gourlay and drove an effort wide.

Elgin had a great chance to equalise midway through the first half when Rabin Omar skewed a left-footed shot off target before Shane Sutherland fired over.

However, the next goal went to Cowdenbeath, as Renton’s 30-yard drive curled away from Gourlay on its way into the bottom corner.

The Blue Brazil made a great start to the second half courtesy of Allan’s fine curling finish from the edge of the penalty area.

Elgin reduced the deficit in the 68th minute when McHardy headed home from JP McGovern’s corner.

But Cowdenbeath soon restored their three-goal advantage as Allan latched on to a pass from Kyle Miller and scored with a low shot.
