Brora Rangers extended their unbeaten league run to eight matches as goals from defender Alistair MacDonald and Mark Nicolson secured a 2-0 win over Huntly.

Assistant manager David Calder admitted scoring so soon after the interval gave his side a huge lift.

He said: “We’ve been doing that lately coming out of the traps in the second half and that helped us as the conditions got worse and it was a bit of scrappy game.

“The movement for the opener is something we’ve worked on. Ally has been getting himself into good positions all season but today took his chance.

“It’s pleasing the defenders are weighing in with goals too. ”

Huntly’s Euan Storrier was kept busy in the early stages as he kept out Kyle MacLeod and Martin MacLean with good saves.

With 25 minutes gone, Brora playermanager Steven Mackay laid the ball to the onrushing MacDonald who fired high into the net from the edge of the box.

Brora goalkeeper Joseph Malin was kept quiet for much of the afternoon but he did

make a crucial save to hold a Michael Clark effort after the defender got on the end of a Paul Napier free kick in the 36th minute. Three minutes into the second half, Alexander Sutherland swung in a corner from the right and his delivery was met by defender Nicholson whose header found the net with the aid of a deflection.

Huntly top scorer Gary McGowan came close late on when his free kick took a deflection to divert his shot wide of the bottom corner.

Huntly have failed to score in their last two away fixtures and manager Martin Skinner admitted they lacked creativity.

He said: “We didn’t do enough to win the game. We didn’t create chances. Brora were pretty good and defensively solid and the early goal in the second half was a killer for us.”
