Ross County AC’s Andrew Mcfarlane produced an outstanding performance when winning the pole vault in the Scottish national open indoor championships at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena.

The 18-year-old Inverness-based athlete cleared a personal best 4.76 metres, an improvement on his previous best set two years ago. It’s the sixth best indoor performance ever achieved by a Scot in the under-20 age group and the 12th best in all ages.

Aberdeen AAC’s Callum Robertson was second with 3.77 while Andrew’s older brother Daniel was third with 3.57.

Andrew said: “I’ll be doing the Scottish senior and under-20 championships over the next few weeks then the English under-20 championships later in the season and I’d like to get over 5m.”

Also in the under-20 age group, Ullapool’s Stephen Mackenzie showed great form in the long jump with a clearance of 7.20m.

Aberdeen AAC’s Robbie Farquhar was next best with 6.63 while his clubmate James Mcintosh was fourth with 6.27.
