Stewart’s return is needed

-

Greg Stewart ticks all the boxes for what Aberdeen are looking for and he will be an excellent addition to the Dons if Derek McInnes can bring the Birmingham City striker back to Pittodrie.

He finished last season well at the Dons and I was surprised to see him join Kilmarnock on loan in the summer rather than return to Aberdeen.

While often used in a wide position last season, it is clear he enjoys the freedom of playing just off a striker and it is in that role that he has done so well for Steve Clarke.

The Dons’ loss has certainly been Killie’s gain, with Stewart revelling in a free role at Rugby Park and his eight goals in 16 games tells me he is back to his best.

He has been in fine form and has been a major reason for Killie’s rise to third place in the Scottish Premiership.

With Stewart looking like the player who was fantastic at Dundee before earning his move to England a few years ago I’m not surprised Derek is after him.

The Dons boss knows how tough it is to get a player of that calibre in the January window but he will be an excellent bit of business if the Reds can get him.

Birmingham manager Garry Monk says Stewart is not in his plans and the decision was made at senior level.

Clearly the Blues are hoping to spark interest in their player and move him on.
