Resolution 5: Rest easy on holiday

While perhaps not an obvious new year resolution, pledging to make your home more secure should be top of the list, says Susan Welsh

- Homes with security systems are 300% less likely to be burgled than those without

Ringing in the new year brings with it the promise that this year we will do better.

Many will strive towards being extra healthy, quitting bad habits or finally cleaning out the attic, but one resolution that should be at the top of everyone’s list is to improve their home security.

Dr Steffan George, of the Master Locksmiths Association (MLA), says: “Home security can seem like a mammoth task, with many not knowing where to begin, but protecting your home against would-be thieves is easier than most people think.

“We can all slip into bad security habits, so what better time of year to start developing good practices that will help protect yourself, your family and your home.”

To help you start 2019 as your best possible (secure) self, the MLA is urging homeowners to follow these simple steps to improve their home security:

Resolution 1: Lock up

Many burglaries are opportunistic, and the majority are committed by those who live nearby, so get into the habit of locking doors and windows – when you’re in the garden or out of the house.

Investing in good-quality locks (for your house, garage and shed) will not only reduce the likelihood of theft, the increased lifespan of the products will also save money in the long term. For a list of rigorously tested security products, visit www.soldsecure.com.

Resolution 2: Invest in a security system

Installing

ahigh-quality burglar alarm or a CCTV surveillance system will help to warn off intruders as it has been proven that homes with security systems are 300% less likely to be burgled than those without.

Resolution 3: Out of sight, out of mind

Open curtains and blinds provide a window-shopping opportunity for potential thieves, especially when high-value gadgets and accessories are left on display.

Start this new year by getting into the practice of putting laptops and tablets, as well as anything of value, away and out of sight when leaving the house.

Resolution 4: Illuminate your home

Security motion sensor lights will detect movement outside your home which will not only help you feel safe when you get home after dark, but also act as a deterrent by alerting you and your neighbours to a potential intruder. If you’re planning on jetting away for some winter sun, don’t advertise on social media that your home will be empty.

Ask a friend or neighbour to park on the driveway to deter potential thieves and ensure post doesn’t build up at your front door.

Using timer lights is a good idea, while a TV simulator placed in an upstairs room creates the impression that someone is home.

Before you begin your home security check, take expert advice from a professional MLA-approved locksmith to carry out a security assessment.
