SNP will continue to stand up for Scotland’s rights
There was no doubt I would walk through the Commons voting lobby to stand against Theresa May’s vote on Brexit.
I am delighted that Parliament emphatically voted down this bad Brexit deal, with the prime minister suffering the greatest defeat in the Commons in history.
The deal would strip Scots of their rights as EU nationals and would have seen businesses in Scotland at a competitive disadvantage to those in Northern Ireland.
It is an absolute farce that Theresa May has continued to peddle her false-choice Brexit, selling her deal as a binary choice between that and “no deal”.
Since the 2017 general election, Westminster has been home to a bitter internal battle of the Tory party, among those Brexiteers who want to drive Scotland wildly off the cliff edge – no matter the cost.
The SNP will be leading calls to extend Article 50 to allow time for a People’s Vote and to allow the prime minister to negotiate a deal that secures Scotland’s continued access to the single market and customs union.
Scotland voted overwhelmingly to remain in the EU, which is by far the best economic outcome for both Scotland and the rest of the UK.
The SNP will continue to stand up for Scotland at Westminster, doing our best to protect the living standards of our constituents.
