O’Halloran: Warriors can trump Edinburgh feat

- Jason O’Halloran

Jason O’Halloran believes Glasgow can trump Edinburgh’s historic victory over Toulon this weekend if they topple Saracens on their own patch.

Richard Cockerill’s capital outfit became the first Scottish side and only the third ever to win a European clash at the Stade Mayol as they claimed a 28-17 win over the French giants on Saturday.

It was a stunning performance which has already been dubbed the best ever single display by a Scottish club outfit.

Yet Warriors assistant coach O’Halloran reckons Toulon had run their race just 45 minutes into the Champions Cup clash and allowed Edinburgh to canter home to a victory that has put them on the verge of a home quarterfinal slot.

And the Kiwi insists his side will get it nowhere near as easy when they take on Mark McCall’s two-time European kings at Allianz Park on Saturday.

Asked how victory this week would compare to famous Scottish wins of the past, he said: “It would be hard to beat that if we were able to get a win down there this weekend, particularly with the couple of injuries we’ve got.

“Edinburgh’s performance at the weekend was outstanding. Toulon started really well but from about five minutes into the second half it looked like Toulon had hit a wall physically and were just running on empty.”

Edinburgh forward Pierre Schoeman, meanwhile, believes they must put their Toulon triumph out of their mind as they prepare to play underdog again when Montpellier visit Murrayfield.

He said: “We have a lot of confidence, it was a great win on Saturday. But I must say (head coach) Richard Cockerill has a way of getting us to zero very quickly, which is necessary for another big game.

“We have home advantage but these are players that played Super Rugby and internationals and travel for them is like brushing their teeth.

“So it’s not going to affect them at all.

“Murrayfield is a very special place and it’s going to boost us with energy and motivation.”
