Matheson going into student championships on a high after great sprint double
Aberdeen AAC’s Rebecca Matheson will go into this weekend’s British universities and colleges indoor championships at Sheffield high in confidence after pulling off a sprint double at the Scottish student championships last weekend.
The RGU student won the 60m in 7.71secs then went on to take the 200m in 24.75 which equals the personal best she achieved at the Scottish women’s championships last month when she finished fifth in the final won by Aberdeen AAC clubmate Zoey Clark.
Matheson’s opponents in both sprints this weekend include Aberdeen University’s Sharon Jakisa and Ailsa Marsh while another RGU student, Eilidh de Klerk has entered the 200m.
Scotland cross country international Zoe Bates (Aberdeen University) is also heading for Yorkshire to tackle the 1500m after winning the Scottish student title while her team-mate Gavin Irvine goes in the 60m. Another Aberdeen University representative, German athlete Jorma Blank will compete in the men’s high jump after winning the Scottish student gold defeating Strathclyde’s Amit Kumar on countback, both clearing 1.80m.
Blank’s opposition includes RGU student Marcus Morton who is aiming to improve on his PB of 2.06. Multievents specialist Robbie Farquhar (RGU) has entered the 60m and long jump while Marcus Archer competes in the 60m and 400m.
Archer’s opponents in the 400m include Aberdeen AAC’s Daniel Rees.
Commonwealth Games 4x400m relay squad member Kelsey Stewart (Aberdeen University) has decided not to compete in the 800m as she prepares for the outdoor season during which she’ll be seeking selection for the European under-23 championships.
In Stewart’s absence Hannah Cameron (RGU) carries north-east hopes in the 800m.
