Midfielder Chalmers in Highland rivals switch

Return to top flight

- BY ANDY SKINNER

Joe Chalmers feels he has unfinished business in the Premiership as he prepares to leave Caley Thistle for Highland rivals Ross County.

Midfielder Chalmers is out of contract at Caledonian Stadium and is expected to finalise a deal to join the Staggies.

Although Chalmers would not be drawn on his exact destination after making what looks to be his final Caley Jags appearance in Friday’s Premiership play-off semi-final loss to Dundee United, the former Motherwell player confirmed a top-flight return is on the cards.

Chalmers said: “I will be in on Tuesday and speak to the manager again and take it from there.

“It looks like it will be my last game. It has still to be tied up but the Premiership is where I want to play football and I feel I want to go and kick on.

“I had a disappointing spell in the Premiership with Motherwell where I didn’t quite show what I was made of.

“I just want to get back there to show that I can play at a high level.”

Chalmers joined Caley Jags following his release by Well in 2017 and has gone on to make 96 appearances for the club.

Having initially joined as a left back, Chalmers hailed Inverness manager John Robertson for instigating his successful shift into midfield, which the 25-yearold feels has produced the best football of his career.

Chalmers said: “It has been a special two years at the club and I am just so grateful to everybody at the club and especially the manager.

“I can’t thank him enough because he has turned my career around.”

Inverness’s 4-0 aggregate loss to United will consign them to a third successive campaign in the Championship, however Chalmers remains proud of his side’s achievements this term, adding: “To go out like that is disappointing but I am proud at the same time because I thought the performances were good over the course of the season and finishing third with such a small squad is a great achievement.

“I am proud of the club, the boys, the manager and everybody at the club and the Scottish Cup run was in there as well. It has been a brilliant season.”
