Plea for information after dozens of tyres set alight

-

Dozens of tyres have been destroyed by vandals after being deliberately set alight in Invergordon.

Around 50 tyres were damaged in the fireraising incident at the derelict garage between Invergordon Parish Church and the oil tanks just off Castle Road on Monday.

The blaze is believed to have started around 10.30am.

Councillor Pauline Munro said: “The poor people living round there; I think everyone got a bit of a fright.

“Anything like this is a concern. We are trying to give Invergordon a wee bit of a lift, getting the town hall up and running so this sort of brings a bit of a rotten feeling, not very nice. It does seem to be the way at times, one step forward 10 steps back. I think everywhere is going through a bit of a hard time at the moment because everyone is feeling

the pinch of all these cuts, but you can’t just blame the cuts, this is human beings behaving this way.”

The fire service sent two teams from Invergordon and Tain to the blaze after receiving the initial call at 10.36am.

Crews used two main jets, one hose reel jet, two breathing apparatus and one high pressure hose reel on the fire, successfully saving the building from total destruction.

Police have now launched an appeal in an effort to find those responsible for the incident.

Constable Liam Hughes said: “It should go without saying that deliberately starting a fire is reckless as you have no real control over how it may develop.

“We would urge anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity around the area at that time to come forward.

“Anyone with information can contact police by calling 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
