COMMUNITY

- BY LOUISE GLEN

A breakfast club for armed forces veterans is to open in Dingwall thanks to the efforts of Poppyscotland and a local funeral director.

The club, which will meet on the first Thursday of every month, will allow former members of the armed forces to meet for a hot drink and bacon roll.

Frances Beveridge, from Poppyscotland, said: “We already have a great relationship with D Gunn Funeral Directors as they sponsor our popular Come Dancing event every year.

“We got talking about what else they could do for our charity and that discussion turned to the idea to start a breakfast club in Dingwall.

“A similar club has already proved to be successful in Inverness, and the new one will provide the opportunity for former service personnel to make new friends. We worked in partnership with Roy Harrison, from Legion Scotland, to get this project up and running and we hope this shows our commitment to our armed forces community.”

Jim Murray, funeral manager at D Gunn Funeral Directors, added: “I know there will be ex-service personnel out there who may have difficulties, which could include loneliness, and so the hope is that by setting up the Veterans Breakfast Club it will give them the opportunity to come along and talk to others who have served.”

The Veterans Breakfast Club will be held at the Croft Restaurant in George Street from 10.30am to 12.30pm.
