McInally’s No. 1 priority is search for north goalkeeper

- BY JAMIE DURENT

Jim McInally is on the lookout for a northbased goalkeeper to ease Peterhead’s shortage between the posts.

Back-up stopper Sam Henderson broke a collarbone in the warmup against Dundee last weekend and will be out for three months, leaving Greg Fleming as their only senior goalkeeper.

McInally is keen to address the situation promptly, with the start of the league campaign against Falkirk coming next weekend.

Henderson joined the Blue Toon after leaving Queen of the South in January and extended his stay through the current season.

Peterhead boss McInally said: “We’re still on the lookout. Ideally, it would be someone from up north; Jason (Brown) spoke to me the other night about a boy that left Aberdeen but had gone to America, who has just come back. But we’re looking to get that sorted.

“Sam just dived during the warm-up and had a bad fall on it. It’s a sore one. Being the number two goalie for us is not easy when Greg Fleming has been such a strong keeper. It’ll be three months out for Sam – we’ll need to do something about it as it’s not something we can leave.”

Henderson replaced fellow teenager Ryan Gibson – brother of Blue Toon midfielder Willie – last season. The younger Gibson is now at Lowland League side Dalbeattie Star.

The only other doubt had been over Rory McAllister, who McInally is allowing to rest after picking up a hamstring injury against Dundee and also being suspended for the first two league games.

He added: “He’s not had any holidays this year, so I think he’s going away for the weekend. He will be OK – because his fitness is so good, once he’s available again we’ll just need to get him up to match speed.”
