Hibs boot Elgin out of cup race

Elgin City’s Betfred Cup campaign came to an end as they went down to a 2-0 defeat against Premiership side Hibernian at Borough Briggs last night.

Hibs took the lead after 10 minutes when Daryl Horgan capitalised on slack defending to reach the byline before crossing for Newell to turn home from close range.

Paul Heckingbottom’s men were wrongly denied a second goal five minutes before the break, when Florian Kamberi was thwarted by an offside flag after turning home Christian Doidge’s header across goal.

City’s closest effort came early in the second half, when lively midfielder Rabin Omar shrugged off Hibs skipper Darren McGregor before he saw his strike from the edge of the box tipped over by Ofir Marciano.
