Thunder in the islands as 200 bikers attend parade

The UK’s most northerly motorcycle parade has attracted more than 200 bikes and raised £9,000 for charity.

Macmillan Cancer Support (Shetland Branch), Disability Shetland and the Shetland MRI Scanner Appeal will all benefit thanks to bikers from across the UK who came out to enjoy a 10-mile loop around Shetland.

Organiser Ashlea Tulloch said it was the largest motorcycle run the island had ever seen.

She said: “Almost everyone on the island with a motorcycle turned up, with some even making the journey up from the UK mainland to join in.

“The event attracted a huge variety of bikes and trikes; a 1938 Rudge Ulster, a Triumph Bonneville t120v, a 2018 Indian Scout and a 2018 MV Agusta f4 to name a few.

“We had lots of newly qualified riders on their first group run next to stalwarts in their 70s, highlighting how varied the motorcycling community in Shetland is.

“A large audience of spectators turned up to the start at Victoria Pier, with dozens more waving, cheering and taking photos along the route.

“There was live music from several local bands, adding to the atmosphere, and the afternoon was a real family-friendly event.

“Bikes congregated on the pier before the parade, giving spectators a chance to view the variety on show.

“Kids were lining up to get their photos taken on the bikes – hopefully inspiring the next generation of motorcyclists.

“There was even a visit overhead from local search and rescue helicopter Oscar Charlie – piloted by a local motorcyclist who was unable to take part on two wheels.”
