North pair strike golden double

North athletes Andrew McFarlane and Angus Davren each struck double gold when competing in the Scottish under-20 championsh­ips at Grangemout­h.

McFarlane, an Inverness-based member of Shettlesto­n Harriers, cleared 4.40m to retain his pole vault title and a throw of 51.75m earned him javelin gold for the second year in a row.

Davren (Inverness Harriers) recorded a PB 11.35sec to win a nail-biting 100m in which Henry Bembom (Kilmarnock Harriers) shared the same time in second position while Struan Linton (Aberdeen AAC) was third in 11.39. Davren also won the high jump when clearing 1.87.

Other Inverness athletes to win a medal were Andrew Bowsher, who took silver in the discus with a PB throw of 39.25, Luke Davidson who also achieved a PB when collecting 800m bronze in 1:57.56, and Alexander Mackay who was third in the shot with 12.41.

Aberdeen AAC’s Jane Davidson won the women’s 100m hurdles in 15.05 while Claire McGarvey (Banchory Stonehaven AC) picked up silver in the high jump with 1.62.

There was also a silver for Marion MacCorquod­ale (North Uist AC) who cleared 10.12 in the shot while Heather Welsh (Nairn) was third in the hammer with a PB 42.59.

Shetland’s Archie Irvine won gold in the under-13 championsh­ip high jump when clearing 1.47m. He added a bronze when recording a PB 13.01 in the 100m.

Other bronze medalists were Leona Fernandes (Inverness Harriers), who threw the javelin 24.27, Ross County’s Femke Waite threw 7.90 in the shot and Andrew Baird ranw 5:03.13 in the 1500m.
