Busting myths on adoption
Any mismatch between the number of children needing loving homes and adults putting themselves forward to provide them is to be regretted.
The reasons behind recent falls in people registering to adopt are many and complex.
One such is the success of IVF; as more women were able to circumvent infertility, so the number pursuing other avenues fell.
But in other cases there is action that can be taken, not least in busting myths about suitability.
If this week devoted to promoting adoption can encourage those who wrongly believe themselves excluded from volunteering, it will have been a success.
