Italian job fires up Christie for road show

-

Ryan Christie is inspired by Celtic’s victory over Lazio in Rome as he bids to turn around Scotland’s away form.

Christie has been a central figure as Celtic made vast improvements in their travelling form in Europe this year during an unbeaten six-match run that continued with a 2-1 win at the Stadio Olimpico last week.

Now the midfielder aims to enjoy another away day as Scotland face Cyprus looking for a much-needed boost ahead of the Euro 2020 play-offs.

When asked about the effects of Celtic’s win in Italy, Christie said: “It certainly helps, it gives you belief.

“But there are no easy games at international level, especially away from home. But we are confident in the set-up and structure we have now.

“If myself and others can bring that experience from club level into the international stage then all the better.”

Christie developed from a peripheral figure to key player at Celtic inside a 12-month period and has netted 12 goals this season.

The 24-year-old is revelling in the responsibility and expectation and aims to do the same with his country.

He added: “I have loved that kind of pressure at club level. It pushes you on as a player and makes you better, having that sort of pressure on your shoulders to perform and make things happen, especially as an attacking player.

“I’m no different when I play for Scotland. I feel I need to make an impact going forward. When you are playing at the high level that’s normally what brings the best out in you.

“With every cap you manage to pick up you get more comfortable and take it in your stride a bit more. I don’t feel I have any stage fright playing for Scotland.

“It’s a huge privilege and a chance you need to grab with both hands. With these two games in March coming up that’s exactly what everyone in the squad is looking to do.

“That will be one of the many things pushing the boys on.

“Obviously we are desperate to get results but if you put in good performances individually then you put your name forward to be in the starting XI come March.

“Everyone is absolutely desperate to do that.”
