Leader backs 50% hike in Iran fuel costs
Iran’s supreme leader has backed the government’s decision to raise petrol prices by 50% and called protesters who have been setting fire to public property over the hike “thugs”.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s comments came as authorities apparently shut down the internet across Iran to smother the protests in around two dozen cities and towns.
Some protests turned violent, and there was gunfire.
