Max Lieber­mann, a bril­liant young English doc­tor liv­ing in the tit­u­lar Aus­trian city while study­ing un­der psy­cho­an­a­lyst Sig­mund Freud. His path crosses with that of lo­cal po­lice de­tec­tive Oskar Rhein­hardt (Juer­gen Mau­rer), and his help proves in­valu­able in solv­ing a baf­fling and dis­turb­ing mur­der case.
