MacDonald to the fore in South Africa

-

Nairn’s Kelsey MacDonald went close to her maiden win on the Ladies European Tour at the weekend.

The 29-year-old finished tied fourth at the Investec SA Women’s Open at Westlake Golf Club in Cape Town, South Africa.

MacDonald was in contention on the closing stretch until a bogey at the par-3 17 th scuppered her chances as she signed for a final round of 73 and a three-under total.

She finished tied fourth and two shots behind winner Alice Hewson from England, who claimed victory on her first Ladies European Tour start.

The 22-year-old came from three shots behind overnight leader Olivia Cowan to win by a stroke.

“I couldn’t have hoped for a better start. It feels absolutely incredible and it really is a dream come true.

“Growing up as a kid all I could ever dream of was playing on the Ladies European Tour, and to come and win my first event the feeling is indescribable,” said Hewson, who turned professional in September and finished fifth at LET Q-School in January.

“This has definitely happened a lot quicker than I thought it would. I was hoping to get off to a nice steady start, but this is definitely a good thing.”
