The Press and Journal (Inverness, Highlands, and Islands)
Highland games part of our rich heritage
SIR, – Thank you for the brilliant three-day series that you ran recently on Highland games (The Press and Journal, May 13-15) and the support that this newspaper continues to provide to these events across northern Scotland.
At Lonach, like our colleagues across the country, cancelling our gathering, pictured, was a difficult and sad decision to have to make.
These cancellations not only affect our communities but also the extensive supply chain of businesses that help to ensure our Highland games take place smoothly and safely each year, providing a significant boost to the country’s economy and the tourism industry.
From independent retailers in our local communities, to marquee hire companies, outside caterers, funfairs, accommodation providers and many more businesses, all play a vital role and have been impacted by these cancellations.
Highland games, like many similar events, also provide an opportunity for craft businesses, local food and drink producers, independent fashion designers and other companies to cost-effectively showcase their products to a large audience.
Although our games are resting this year, we will be back to ensure centuries of tradition are maintained and we continue to welcome thousands of visitors from home and abroad to celebrate Scottish culture, music, traditional sports, dance and heritage for many years to come.
By attending a Highland games you are not only marking the country’s rich heritage, but supporting a range of businesses and helping to boost the local economy.
In 2021, I urge you to attend a Highland games and see why thousands of overseas visitors include a trip to an event like the Lonach Gathering as part of their holiday in Scotland each year.
