Town’s Clarks store will not be reopening

Shoemaker Clarks is to permanentl­y close its shop on Elgin’s High Street.

Bosses have said “careful considerat­ion” was given before deciding not to reopen after lockdown.

The firm is consulting with the nine shop staff – the nearest alternativ­e store is in Inverness.

The lease was to expire next month and the premises are currently being cleared.

A Clarks spokeswoma­n said: “We continuall­y review all of our stores to ensure they are the right size and located in the right areas in order to provide the best possible offering and environmen­t to our customers.

“After careful considerat­ion we have decided to no longer trade at Elgin. We have a strong duty of care to all our employees and are working closely with them as they now go through a period of consultati­on.”
