The humble cardigan will never go out of style

The humble cardigan should never be overlooked, writes Ellie House

The cardigan should be a staple item in your wardrobe. Throw on over a dress or drape around your shoulders for a walk, it’s an incredibly versatile piece which goes with practically anything. But not all cardigans are knitted equally. If you want your cardigan to last a good few years without going bobbly or losing shape, it’s worthwhile spending just that bit more.

You can easily blow the budget if you opt for cashmere, but there are also some high-quality and purse-friendly buys.

A chunky knit offers a stylish look, and works well teamed with a midi dress or tea dress.

Opt for a plain print underneath, or the thick wool will look overdone.

If you’re wearing skinny jeans or a skirt, select a slightly cropped T-shirt before you start layering.

You can also go longer in length with a cardi, although this style is best saved for the colder months.

Pinks, blues and creams will never let you down, although pastel rainbow styles are creeping into 2020.

If you want your cardi to last, always read the label.

Most will require a wool wash and need reshaping while damp.

The tumble dryer is not your friend, and for investment cardigans such as the range by Pure Collection, you may want to find a good dry cleaners.

For a simple yet fashionable look, you can even wear a cardigan buttoned up with a vest top underneath.
