■ 1814 – The MCC and Hertfordshire played the first match at the present-day Lord’s, after the original ground laid by Sir Thomas Lord was moved to the St John’s Wood site it still occupies.

■ 2004 – Inverness were promoted to the Scottish Premier League when topflight clubs voted in their favour after they appealed against a decision to reject them.
