Highland drive-in puts fans in the pictures

A night at the movies may still seem like a fair distance away, but a new venture will bring a drive-in cinema north to Inverness.

The event, scheduled for four nights in August, will allow keen moviegoers – or those seeking to take advantage of the novelty factor – the opportunity to take in a film from the comfort of their own car.

From August 7, the car park at the Caledonian Stadium will be transformed with a 40ft inflatable screen erected, as audio is transmitted into vehicles via radio frequency.

The films on show are Toy Story on Friday August 7, Grease on Saturday August 8, Joker on Sunday August 9 and Braveheart on Monday August 10, with viewings beginning at 9.15pm each night to allow enough darkness to creep in.

The drive-in cinema venture has been born out of lockdown by events organiser Callum Campbell after he had numerous student boxing events cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

He said: “It was quite difficult to get a location secured but we are delighted to get to this stage.”

Inverness Caley Thistle chief executive Scot Gardiner welcomed the venture as the club explores avenues to generate income from its facilities.

He said: “We have been looking for different revenue streams and the opportunity just came up.

“It will be really different and really unusual but a fun experience for everyone.”
