Government unveils recovery plans

The UK Government has unveiled a “bounce back plan” to help the agricultur­e, food and drink industries recover from the coronaviru­s crisis.

The plan, which will be delivered in conjunctio­n with businesses and the devolved administra­tions, aims to support businesses in the industry grow their trade activity overseas.

It includes: a programme of “ready to trade” exporting seminars; the appointmen­t of an agrifood counsellor to support exports to the Gulf; and expansion of Defra’s Food is GREAT promotiona­l campaign into the United Arab Emirates and Europe later this year.

“This package of measures signifies our strong commitment to support the sector in recovering from the impact of coronaviru­s,” said Defra under secretary of state, Victoria Prentis.

“It includes the promotion and showcasing of British expertise and produce to new export markets, identifyin­g opportunit­ies and strengthen­ing existing relationsh­ips.”

Food and Drink Federation chief executive Ian Wright said food and drink exports would be vital in aiding the UK’s post-Covid recovery.
