Wales goal hero can’t wait to take on England
Wales hero Neco Williams set his sights on England after scoring a dramatic Nations League winner against Bulgaria.
The Liverpool teenager, making only his second Wales appearance as a 65th-minute sub, headed home Jonny Williams’ farpost cross in the fourth minute of stoppage time to secure a 1-0 win in Cardiff.
Now the 19-year-old is likely to make his first start against England, who tried to convince the full-back his future lay with them, in a Wembley friendly on October 8.
“Next month we’ve got
England and that’s going to be a great game,” Williams said after scoring his first goal in senior football.
“With the quality we have in this team we’re going to prove we’re capable of beating them.”
Wrexham-born Williams could have played for England due to a grandparental qualification.
Meanwhile, Substitute Fredrik Jensen ruined Stephen Kenny’s big night as he came off the bench to fire Finland to Nations League victory over the Republic of Ireland.
Jensen had been on the pitch for just 18 seconds when he fired the Finns ahead somewhat against the run of play to ensure the manager’s first home game ended in a 1-0 defeat at an empty Aviva Stadium.
Manager Kenny is already turning his attention to the task ahead next month. He said: “We were a bit experimental in the games and we want players to really put their hand up and put themselves in the picture.”
