Day at the Well of misfortune

Ross Stewart endured an exasperating day of missed opportunities at Motherwell but is certain his league goal drought for Ross County will end soon.

The 24-year-old was desperately unlucky not to strike for the third time in the Scottish Premiership this season at Fir Park in a 4- 0 defeat marred by sloppily conceded goals.

Stewart had headers cleared off the line by Well scorer Tony Watt and Stephen O’Donnell and failed to beat substitute goalkeeper Aaron Chapman when sent clean through as the home side dominated the second half.

Watt broke the stalemate eight minutes before half-time, Mark O’Hara added a second from the penalty spot after the break, with Callum Lang and

Devante Cole also on target to ensure a disappointing day for the Staggies at Motherwell.

County’s most potent threat came from striker Stewart, who has not lost any self- belief despite the fruitless outing.

He said: “I came in very annoyed and frustrated at the end of the gamme.

“I had one great chance and I had two off the line. It was disappointing not to get on to the scoresheet.

“The chances have been there, and I have to take more of hem.”

County have netted seven times in 12 league games this term and Stewart has vowed to improve that statistic. He said: “Bar one or two games, we have created a lot of chances.

“The fair share of the chances have fallen to me and I will always hold my hands up. “The chances I missed I know I should score.

“As a striker you have to keep putting yourself in the right position annd I know if I do that thent things will turn. “I will start takking a few and when they come, they can come in a flurry.

“It doesn’t dent my confidence; it will certainly not stop me putting myself out there.

“You will miss a few, but there is no way I will stop putting myself between those sticks and trying to get more.”

County head to Dundee United on Saturday seeking a first league win since beating St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park on September 19.

Stewart said: “We will look at the game on Monday and learn from it.

“From our point of view, it was not good enough. The goals we conceded were cheap.

“We know that in the dressing room we will pick ourselves up and go again – you cannot dwell on your defeats in this league.

“Games are coming quickly, and it will be another tough one away to Dundee United.”
