Old military vehicles roll at museum

- FELICITY DONOHOE

If you’re into heavy metal then make Grampian Transport Museum (GTM) your destination tomorrow morning for their Military Vehicle Tattoo.

The award-winning museum in Alford will welcome a military vehicle parade to its ground, offering a rare opportunity to dedicated collectors of some of the most impressive military land vehicles to show off their pride and joy to a curious public.

Visitors will be able to get up close and personal with rare tanks, rescue vehicles, motorcyles, and more – and hear the unique stories of each vehicle.

Whether rescuing or transporting mighty tanks, protecting personnel in armoured carriers and Jeeps, or carrying vital despatches between armoured divisions, each military vehicle is built to serve a specific purpose.

Organiser Roddy Matheson, himself an enthusiast of military hardware, expressed his appreciation of the owners who are bringing their vehicles along to the museum for the public to see.

He said: “It is a logistics challenge to get a lot of the kit here, and the museum really appreciates all of the time and effort dedicated to putting on a good show.

“It gives our visitors the opportunity to see some very rare and unusual military hardware, and it is an impressive sight,” he added.

The tattoo opens to the public at 11am. Tickets for adults cost £10, children free. Under 15s must be accompanied by an adult and dogs on leads are admitted on site. Tickets will be available on the day and can be bought with cash or card.

Upcoming events on the GTM calendar include Greenpower Goblins (ages 9-11) and Greenpower F24 (11-16) on June 9 and 10.

The events are run alongside Greenpower Education Trust, a charity which generates interest in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) through motorsport.

In the events, teams of students aged nine to 25 from across the globe compete at Greenpower events in the UK and other countries including USA, Spain, Portugal, Belgium and China.
