Flights farce hits birthday party in the sun

The Press and Journal (Inverness) - - NEWS - BY RYAN HOOPER

A woman will make a delayed start to her landmark birthday celebrations af ter the Monarch Airlines fiasco left her stuck at Gatwick.

Gabbi Littlefield and her husband Jon Littlefield were due to arrive in the Croatian coastal destination of Dubrovnik on Monday morning ahead of her 30th birthday on Wednesday.

But the airline’s collapse meant the couple were forced to splash the cash to ensure her birthday went ahead as planned.

Mrs Littlefield, an admin worker from Basingstoke, said: “I had never flown with Monarch before, turned up here at 3.50am to just be told by the staff that the company has gone bust and there might be no more flights.

“We weren’t really sure what we could do. We travelled here from Basingstoke so we felt a little bit stranded. We were a little bit frustrated but we understand it’s nobody’s fault.

“Our first instinct was to hit the computers, get the first flight we can find, get a hotel room (nearby for a few hours), try to get some sleep and pick up the holiday today.

“It’s cost us almost £800 so far for alternative flights, and hotel rooms and taxis.

“We’ve got to rearrange transfers at the other end so we are keeping invoices and receipts and documenting everything.

“I will be relieved when we – hopefully, finally – get there this evening.”
