Mullins award is lashed by BHA
RED faces all round at the McCoys racing awards dinner at Cheltenham racecourse on September 28. There was widespread embarrassment when top Irish amateur Patrick Mullins was given the prize for the ride of the year on Rathvinden in the four mile NH Chase at the Festival in March.
Mullins left the course that afternoon with a six-day ban for using his whip above the permitted level and without giving his horse time to respond from the last fence.
The BHA promptly issued a statement saying they were extremely surprised and disappointed at the choice of Mullins’ ride for the award. It was, they added tartly, somewhat short of acceptable.
Did the judges, including Sir Anthony McCoy and Gold Cup-winning trainer Henrietta Knight, forget about Mullins suspension?
