FIGURES revealed last week suggest that bookie Fred Done has made several fortunes since opening his first betting shop in 1967 with funds he won betting on England in the World Cup a year earlier.

Done, aged 75, is chairman of Warrington-based Betfred who have 1,666 betting shops and a thriving on line betting and gaming operation.

His deal in 2011 to buy the Tote for £265m was a masterstroke which swiftly boosted his turnover and profits.

Betfred is now ranked ninth in the list of Britain’s private mid-market growth companies.
