Gary calls it a day for the third time
GARY STEVENS made almost as many comebacks as Frank Sinatra before finally hanging up his saddle late last month after sustaining a spinal injury in the paddock at Del Mar.
Stevens, 55, rode 5187 winners, including three Kentucky Derbys, and also played the role of veteran jockey George Wolf in the movie Seabiscuit.
He first retired in 1999 with a knee problem but was back racing again a year later.
When Stevens retired again in 2005 he began working as an analyst for NBC. His third comeback in 2013 after surgery to his hip and knee was crowned by a memorable success on Oxbow in the Preakness Stakes a few months later.
