Gary calls it a day for the third time

GARY STEVENS made al­most as many come­backs as Frank Si­na­tra be­fore fi­nally hang­ing up his sad­dle late last month after sus­tain­ing a spinal in­jury in the pad­dock at Del Mar.

Stevens, 55, rode 5187 win­ners, in­clud­ing three Ken­tucky Der­bys, and also played the role of vet­eran jockey Ge­orge Wolf in the movie Se­abis­cuit.

He first re­tired in 1999 with a knee prob­lem but was back rac­ing again a year later.

When Stevens re­tired again in 2005 he be­gan work­ing as an an­a­lyst for NBC. His third come­back in 2013 after surgery to his hip and knee was crowned by a mem­o­rable suc­cess on Oxbow in the Preak­ness Stakes a few months later.
