No doubt about the stamina of Thomas
THOMAS PATRICK can land the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury today (3.30).
Richard Johnson is on board this progressive staying chaser who is improving with every visit to the racecourse.
He was narrowly beaten by Elegant Escape on his comeback run at Sandown last time but he’s weighted to reverse the form with Colin Tizzard’s penalised runner today.
Thomas Patrick has already tasted success over this course and distance having won a handicap on soft ground in March.
He then went to Aintree and hammered a useful field when taking a Grade 3 handicap where he ran away from all his challengers.
It could be that Liverpool will be his ultimate target as he looks a Grand National horse in the making — and his proven stamina will be a major asset.
Groundwise, he is definitely suited by plenty of cut underfoot and there should be a lot more to come after just five chase runs.
At a bigger price, Black Corton was our selection for the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby where he ran well to finish second.
He proved himself over this trip last season and is set a fairer challenge back in handicap company here. It was a surprise to see double-figure prices about him for this and he can reward each-way support.
Ms Parfois has not done a lot wrong over fences and finished last season with a second in the Grade 1 Milmay Novices’ Chase at Aintree.
That was after an excellent second in the marathon National Hunt Chase at the Festival where her stamina came to the fore. If the rain comes down, she would be a threat.
Should the weather be brighter, The Young Master would come right into the reckoning.
He was very impressive when winning by eight lengths at Cheltenham last time out.
This is a tougher, but he’s got just a 4lb penalty for that success – with Sam WaleyCohen’s claim accounting for most of that.
