RICHARD Pitman turned to the peerless commentator Sir Peter O’Sullevan for advice when he retired from riding to join the BBC’s racing team.

O’Sullevan’s advice was succinct: “Keep talking the bollocks you did as a jockey”!

Pitman told the story against himself on Monday after receiving the prestigious George Ennor award at the annual HWPA lunch in London on Monday.

The trophy was presented by seven times champion jockey John Francome who spoke of Pitman’s generosity of spirit.

He said: “Richard has always been a giver and even saved the life of a stranger a few years ago by donating one of his kidneys.”
